Pre-Prosthetic Surgery: Preparing for Dentures
From time to time, minor oral surgery is needed in preparation for dentures. Because dentures rest on the bone ridge of the jaw, it is key for the bone to be smooth in order to achieve a comfortable fit. Often, Dr. Wasson, Dr. Wang or Dr. Amini can perform a simple pre-prosthetic procedure in our office to smooth the bone out, removing excess bone and sharp and uneven edges as needed to create a comfortable cradle for dentures. These procedures can enhance a patient’s experience with dentures in terms of aesthetics, function, fit and feel.
Common Pre-Prosthetic Procedures Include:
- Removal of excess bone to smooth and reshape the ridge
- Tooth extraction
- Bone grafting
- Excess gum tissue removal
- Bone ridge reduction
- Impacted teeth exposure
Most pre-prosthetic surgery procedures are relatively quick and painless. You will be kept comfortable during the procedure, and instructions for home care will help you to stay comfortable well after your visit.
